Protect the Environment and Help Save Wildlife
Each year, millions of gallons of oil contaminate North America’s waterways. But—thankfully—you can do many easy, everyday things to help solve this and many other environmental problems.
Help Protect the Environment
Reuse and recycle plastic. Plastic materials that litter the ground are often carried into bodies of water by rain and wind. Marine wildlife such as turtles, whales, and dolphins confuse plastic for food. When ingested, their digestive tracts may become blocked and they may die from starvation.
Bring your own reusable canvas or cotton bag to the grocery store or to the mall to carry your purchases. You can also reuse paper or plastic bags to help reduce trash.
Dispose of fishing lines/lures properly to help keep them out of the ocean as animals can mistake them for food.
Avoid releasing helium balloons into the sky. When they deflate, they often fall into bodies of water, where they are mistaken for food and ingested by wildlife.
If purchasing beverages attached with "six pack" plastic rings, cut the rings apart before throwing the piece away. When these materials are littered onto the ground or fall out of garbage trucks, rain and wind often carries them into bodies of water. Birds, fish, and small land animals can then get caught in the rings.
If you find an aquatic animal that is oiled or injured, contact your local animal rescue organization or organization center. Keep an eye on the animal until help arrives and do not touch, wash, or feed it. Stay 50 feet back from it, and keep people and dogs away.
If you do not find a specific animal rescue organization or animal control center in your area, call your local Game & Fish Department, Animal Control Officer, Humane Society, or veterinarian. They may be able to direct you to a local organization for help.
Stay informed on current issues relating to environmental protection and help educate friends and family on how they can help protect the environment. Use your voice by writing to government officials and supporting legislation that endorses environmental protection.
Reduce Oil Pollution to Help Protect the Environment
Practice proper oil disposal: Avoid pouring motor oil or other oily substances into storm drains, on the ground or in a ditch. Instead, recycle used oil and antifreeze at a recycling center.
Keep vehicles well maintained to prevent oil and fuel leakage on the ground and in water. Cars and trucks leak oil and fuel onto roads, which streams into bodies of water when it rains. Boats and jet skis can leak oil and fuel directly into water as well.
Place cooking oils and fats in a sealed container in the garbage instead of pouring them down the kitchen drain.
Avoid topping off at the gas pump as it can cause gas to spill onto the ground, and the residue can run off into creeks and our ocean.
Use drip pans when unclipping hoses, unscrewing filters, or removing car parts.
Walk, cycle, or even take the bus whenever possible.
